Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles
in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in
books, reports and reviews.
EconLit
1969- Librarian's take: Major resource for Economics. A comprehensive
index of journal articles, books, book reviews, collective, working papers
and dissertations. While only some articles are available in full-text,
this is perhaps one of the most comprehensive databases for searching for
Economics articles.

Bibliography of the Social Sciences 1951- Librarian's take:
From London School of Economics and Political Science, based on the core
disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science and sociology,
this database indexes the information contained in over 2,600 social
sciences journals and 6,000 books each year.

Scopus
Librarian's take: Scopus is one of the largest abstract and
citation database of research literature and quality web sources. Updated
daily, Scopus covers 29 million abstracts of over 15,000 peer-reviewed
titles from more than 4,000 publishers, 265 million references. In many
ways similar to Social
Science Citation Index , use them for a broader interdisciplinary
search.

Social
Science Citation Index (via Web of Science), 1988- Librarian's
take: Indexes thousands of academic journals in virtually every discipline
in the social sciences, including demography, economics and statistics.
Its unique feature is the ability to trace related articles, using a
citation as a starting point.

Sciences Abstracts 1984- Librarian's take: Provides
comprehensive abstracting and indexing of more than 518 English-language
periodicals in the areas of anthropology, criminology, economics, law,

ABI/Inform
Complete Librarian's take: A comprehensive business database
offers nearly 3,000 full-text titles covering business and economic
conditions, corporate strategies, management techniques, as well as
competitive and product information.
Business
Source Premier Librarian's take: A database covering several
thousand business, management and economics journals. Contains many case
studies, industry reports and country profiles and reports.
Tip : For reports on country X search for any one or all of the
following publications. "X Country monitor", "X Country review", "X
country profile", "X country review", "X Economic studies", "X economic
competitiveness" or "Country commerce X" where X is a country.
Tip : For reports on a particular industry, select "Industry
profile" for Publication type in the basic search.
Factiva Librarian's
take: Full-text news articles and business information including market
research, investment analyst reports and stock quotes from global news
agencies. Newswires include Dow Jones, Reuters, Associated Press, Asia
Pulse, and over 120 other continuously updating industry, press release
and local newswires.

CountryData Librarian's take: EIU CountryData provides data for
317 series on 150 countries running from 1980 onwards through a powerful,
yet intuitive interface. For the 82 most important markets, key variables
are additionally projected to 2030 in order to facilitate business
planning.
Eurostat
Key resource to European statistics covering general and regional
statistics, economy and finance, population and social conditions,
industry, trade and services, agriculture, transport, environment, science
and technology and energy. Special themes - Euro indicators, structural
indicators, Eurostat yearbook, sustainable development and government
finance.
Global
Market Information Database (GMID) Librarian's take: Good for
statistics on countries markets, consumer lifestyles and companies. Some
are exportable to spreadsheet format.
Frost
& Sullivan Database of market research reports and
forecasts. Strong in medical and information & communication
technology research. Coverage: varies.
Industrial
statistics database [electronic resource] : 4-digit level of ISIC code
(revision 2and 3) Librarian's take: Contains data on domestic
output, countries imports and exports. The data pertain to manufacturing
and are arranged according to Revision 3 (or Revision 2) of ISIC at the
4-digit level, which comprises 127 manufacturing industries (or 81
industries).
International
Financial Statistics Librarian's take: Produced by IMF. Good
source for data on foreign direct investments, supply of money etc.
Contains time series data and provides international statistics on
international and domestic finance from as early as 1945 (for selected
time series).
International
Statistical Yearbook Official statistics and publications
relating to market analysis, forecasts, and economic research in European
Union, OECD, United Nations, World Bank, World Trade Organization,
Business Monitor International, DSI Data Service & Information,
Enerdata, Experian, Statistics Canada, Stat-USA.
International
Trade Statistics Produced by World Trade Organisation, it
provides detailed analysis and tables for leading traders, trade by sector
and product, regional trade, LDCs, etc.
ISI
Emerging Markets Librarian's take: ISI Emerging Markets
aggregates news, financials and company data for over 55 countries in a
multi-language format.

Monthly
bulletin of statistics = Bulletin mensuel de
statistique Produced by the United Nations Statistics Division,
coverage includes global statistical information, statistical methods,
classifications and definitions. Many of the Division's databases are also
available on this site including Monthly Bulletin of Statistics,
Statistical Yearbook and World Statistics Pocketbook.
Orbis Librarian's
take: A global database with information on 16 million companies and has a
wealth of information provided for companies including financial
information, annual reports, board members, mergers and acquisitions, and
stock data. Peer analyses are also available.
SourceOECD Librarian's
take: Good source for FDI. Online Library of Statistical Databases, Books
and Periodicals. This database allows the user to select the data (partner
country, inflows, outflows, inflow position, outflow position, reporting
country, and number of years) and select the download format.
Statistics
Database (World Trade Organisation) Provides access to
statistical information on trade profiles, tariff profiles and Time Series
on merchandise and commercial services trade.
UNIDO industrial
statistics database (CDROM) see Industrial statistics
database [electronic resource] : 4-digit level of ISIC code (revision 2and
3)
United
Nations Common Database (UNCDB) As of 1 May 2007, use of the
Common Database is free of charge. Produced by the United Nations
Statistical Office, it provides access to hundreds of statistical series
for all countries and areas of the world. Data coverage: balance of
payments, financial statistics, income, consumption and wealth, and
national accounts
World
Development Indicators (WDI), 1960- Librarian's take: Good
source FDI. Offers the World Bank's comprehensive database on development
data, covering more than 600 indicators, 208 economies, and 18 regional
and income groups. The extensive collection of development data includes
social, economic, financial, natural resources, and environmental
indicators.
World
Economic Outlook Reports Surveys by the IMF usually published
twice a year. Presents IMF economists' analyses of global economic
developments during the near and medium term.

Working Papers Librarian's take: Founded by the National Bureau of
Economic Research, a leading US nonprofit economic research organization.
Areas of research includes developing new statistical measurements,
estimating quantitative models of economic behavior, assessing the effects
of public policies on the U.S. economy.

Research Papers in Economics (RePEc)
RePEC provides a large database of over 500,000 bibliographic
citations including over 230,000 working papers. It is particularly useful
for finding unpublished or yet to be published working papers.
Social Science Research Network
This database requires online registration but is otherwise
free. It includes both an abstract database containing abstracts on
over 180,000 scholarly working papers and a full text database of about
140,000 journal articles.

Though no longer updated after June 2007, it still contains perhaps the
