Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles
in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in
books, reports and reviews.
Communication
& Mass Media Complete (CMMC), 1920- Librarian's take: This
database offers good coverage on communication, mass media, public relations
and communication linguistics. You can search using
Boolean search, natural language search, or search within the full-text of
articles.
Web
of Science, 1980- Librarian's take: All articles in Web of Science are peer-reviewed. Its
cited reference search feature and related reference search feature allow
you to broaden your search scope.
PsycInfo,
1984- Librarian's take: This psychology database is relevant for
topics such as online gaming, robotics, cognitive psychology and social
psychology.
ACM Digital
Library, 1985-
Librarian's take: This database is useful for topics such as cyborgs and
digital media.
Hein Online,
1870-
Librarian's take: This is a full-text legal research database which is very useful
for topics such as cybercrime, communication law, cyber law, and media
law.
Factiva,
2002- Librarian's take: This full-text news database is essential for
tracking media news.
If you have difficulty accessing Factiva due to heavy
usage, try
Lexis-Nexis
Academic which is equally competent.
LexisNexis Academic, 1998- Librarian's take: Other than news, this database
covers law information such as legislation, administrative law,
international law, media law and patent law.
Proquest Dissertations and Theses - Full Text, 1861-
Librarian's take: This is the most comprehensive database on U.S.
doctoral dissertations, and it also includes master's theses submitted
to top American universities. Full-text of many dissertations and theses
are available for downloading. As downloading may be time-consuming, do
read the abstract first.
JSTOR
Librarian's take: This full-text database contains back issues of
important scholarly journals in all subject areas. Back issues start
from the first issue up to 3 to 5 years before the present. You can
search the full-text of these articles by keyword.
Business
Source Premier (BSP), 1965- Librarian's take: Start with this
database if you are doing business research.
You will find
information on industry research, market research as well as country
reports. However, the database does not cover Asian markets. Use ABI/Inform
Complete for Asian market research.
Global
Market Information Database (GMID) Librarian's take: Also
popularly known as Euromonitor, this database is excellent for market
research reports.
EIU.com Librarian's
take: This database is excellent for country reports. However, it covers
only Asian countries. Use Business
Source Premier for non-Asian country reports.
EIU
CountryData Librarian's take: This database does not contain reports
but only pure data. Use this country data to fill the time lag in EIU.com.
Coverage is international.
