Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Engineering Village 2 (EV2)
EV2 is an integrated search interface providing access to over 8 million abstracts from Compendex, Inspec & NTIS and other databases including patents and standards including Esp@cenet and USPTO, and the science-only search engine Scirus. It allows for combined searching of the Compendex, Inspec & NTIS databases on the broadest possible range of topics within the scientific, applied science, technical and engineering disciplines and includes journal articles, proceedings, unclassified government reports, and more. The databases are updated weekly.

Below are brief descriptions of three databases in EV2:

Compendex (1969-) has over 9 million records from over 5,000 journals, papers in conference proceedings, book chapters, technical papers, etc. Comprehensively represents all fields of engineering with coverage of over 175 disciplines and major specialties including related fields in science and management.

Inspec (1969-) is produced by the Institution of Electrical Engineers. It contains over eight million bibliographic records taken from 3,500 scientific and technical journals and 1,500 conference proceedings. Provides access to the world's scientific literature in electrical engineering, electronics, physics, control engineering, information technology, communications, computers, computing, and manufacturing and production engineering.

NTIS : National Technical Information Service (1899-), from the U.S. Department of Commerce, contains over 2 million records, including unclassified reports from influential U.S. and international government agencies such as NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense. Contents include research reports, computer products, software, video cassettes, audio cassettes and more.

Using ScienceDirect: User Guides and Tutorials (Publisher)

Science Citation Index Expanded (via Web of Science), 1980-
Science Citation Index Expanded (1980-) is a multidisciplinary index to the journal literature of the sciences providing full indexes to over 5,900 major journals across 150 scientific disciplines. Disciplines covered include biotechnology, computer science, materials science, mathematics and many more.

Librarian's take: This database's unique features included citation index, analytical tools in evaluating and ranking journals, related records search capability and links to full-text journals subscribed by NUS Libraries.
