Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles
in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in
books, reports and reviews.
ACM Portal
The ACM Portal is published by the Association for Computing Machinery. It
consists of The ACM Digital Library, which is a vast collection of citations and full text from ACM journal
and newsletter articles and conference proceedings, and The Guide to
Computing Literature, which is a collection of more than 750,000 citations and abstracts of works,
covering books, journal articles, conference proceedings, doctoral
dissertations, master’s theses, and technical reports, from 3,000+
publishers, including ACM.

Computer
and Information Systems Abstracts 1981 -
Accessible via CSA Illumina, this database provides monthly
updates on the latest theoretical research and practical
applications. Major areas of coverage include artificial
intelligence, computer applications, computer programming,
computer systems organization, hardware, information
systems, mathematics of computing, and software engineering.
Sources covered include over 3,000 periodicals, conference
proceedings, technical reports, trade journal/newsletter
items, patents, books, and press releases.

Emerald Abstracts
Emerald Abstracts contains four abstracting and indexing databases which
contain article abstracts from the journals in civil engineering, computer
science, computer & communications security and library & information
management fields.
Below are the brief descriptions of the four index databases in Emerald
Abstracts:
Computer & Communications Security Abstracts (1996- ) has over 13,000
abstracts from 100 foremost journals in computer and communications
security, with additional abstracts from the most important international
conferences in the field. The subjects covered include biometric
identification techniques, cryptography, electronic commerce security,
intrusion detection, malicious software, network security, trusted third
parties.
Computer Abstracts International Database (1987- ) has over 190,000
abstracts, dating back to 1987, from the 200 foremost journals in computer
science. CAID’s accredited journal coverage list is compiled from the
library holdings of computing centers of excellence worldwide, such as
Stanford University and MIT. The subjects covered include artificial
intelligence, communications and networks, computer theory, database and
information systems, hardware, programming, systems organization.
Current Awareness Abstracts (1988- ) has access to abstracts of the
essential library and information management articles from the core 400
publications worldwide. Users can search or browse an archive of 30,000
abstracts back to 1988, with new abstracts added each month. The subjects
covered include librarianship/information management, academic/non-academic
libraries,
records management/archives, serials management, website
searching/management.
International Civil Engineering Abstracts (1976- ) over 142,000
abstracts dating back to 1976 from the 150 most prominent journals in civil
engineering. The ICEA accredited journal coverage list is compiled from the
library holdings of civil engineering centres of excellence worldwide, such
as the Institute of Civil Engineers and Imperial College, London. The
subjects covered include construction management, environmental engineering,
structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering,
transport engineering.
Engineering Village 2
Engineering Village 2 (EV2) is the most important Engineering research
database. It has five sub databases: Compendex, Inspec, National Technical
Information Service (NTIS), Chimica and Chemical Business NewsBase (CBNB)
which can be searched individually or together (more on each database
below). It has over 16 million records, some of which have links to full
text. EV2 covers journals, conference proceedings, unclassified government
reports, and more. It also has links to useful sites like the European
Patent Office, Esp@cenet and scientific research tool, Scirus.
Compendex (over 10
million records, 1969-) indexes articles from over 5,600 journals and
conference proceedings. It includes millions of bibliographic citations and
abstracts from thousands of engineering journals and conference proceedings.
Over 190 disciplines in the all fields of engineering, as well as related
fields in science and management are covered.
Inspec (8 million
records, 1969-) is produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology
(IET). It indexes 3,500 journals and 1,500 conference proceedings. Topics
covered are physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications,
control engineering, computers and computing, IT, material science,
biomedical technology, etc.
NTIS (over 2
million records, 1899- ) is a source of reports (including unclassified
ones) from US and international government agencies like NASA, the United
States Departments of Energy and Defense, the German Federal Ministry of
Research and Technology and the Japan Ministry of International Trade and
Industry.
CBNB (1985- ) provides
worldwide chemical business news and information. Sources include 300 core
trade journals, newspapers, company newsletters/interim and annual reports,
books, market research reports, and press releases.
Chimica (1970- )
covers 600 journals on chemistry and chemical engineering, with emphasis on
applied and analytical chemistry. Other topics are physical chemistry,
health and safety, organic and inorganic chemistry, and materials science.

IEEE Xplore
IEEE Xplore is a database that provides full text access in the discipline
of electrical engineering, computer science and electronics. It contains
more than a million articles in over 12000 individual publications. The
images available include charts, graphs, diagrams, photographs, and
illustrative material, from an integrated-circuit schematic to a topographic
map to a photograph of a new crystalline structure. The full text documents
available are IEEE journals, transactions, magazines, letters and conference
proceedings (from 1988), IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology)
publications (from 1988), IEEE books (from 1974), and standards (from 1948).

Science Citation Index Expanded (via Web of Science), 1900-
Science Citation Index Expanded (1900-) is a multidisciplinary index to the
journal literature of the sciences providing full indexes to over 5,900
major journals across 150 scientific disciplines. Disciplines covered
include biotechnology, computer science, materials science, mathematics and
many more.
Librarian's take: This database's unique features included citation index,
analytical tools in evaluating and ranking journals, related records search
capability and links to full-text journals subscribed by NUS Libraries.

Scopus has 29 million records. It covers life sciences, physical sciences,
health sciences, social sciences and business. It indexes journals,
conference proceedings, trade publications and quality web sources. It does
citation tracking. A researcher can find out how many times a particular
article has been cited.

Structures
This is a dictionary of algorithms, algorithmic techniques, data structures,
archetypal problems, and related definitions. Algorithms include common
functions, such as Ackermann's function. Problems include traveling salesman
and Byzantine generals. Some entries have links to implementations and more
information. Index pages list entries by area and by type.
Dictionary of Information
Science and Technology
The Dictionary of Information Science and Technology is a comprehensive
reference source for the latest terms and definitions related to all aspects
of the information science and technology field.
Free On-line Dictionary of Computing
The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing is a searchable dictionary of
acronyms, jargon, programming languages, tools, architectures, operating
systems, networking, theory, mathematics, telecoms, institutions, companies,
projects, products, history, etc.
Online Technology Dictionary
BABEL
BABEL is a free glossary of computer oriented abbreviations and acronyms.
These are abbreviations and acronyms found in personal computers,
multimedia, communications, programming, networking, etc.
Encyclopedias
TechEncyclopedia
TechWeb's TechEncyclopedia is a mammoth database of over 20,000 IT words,
phrases, and acronyms. All terms include more than just a standard
definition; you get a full treatment of what the term means as well as
related articles that talk more about it. Most entries have illustrations,
photos, charts, or diagrams that help explain the terminology.
Educypedia
Educypedia is a collection of selected hyperlinks to online resources all
over the world. All the links are tested with respect to content, no
commercial links.
Webopedia
Webopedia is a free online dictionary for words, phrases and abbreviations
that are related to computer and Internet technology. Webopedia provides
easy-to-understand definitions in plain language, avoiding the use of heavy
jargon when possible so that the site is accessible to users with a wide
range of computer knowledge.
WhatIs.com
WhatIs.com is a glossary and encyclopedia of information technology terms.
Linktionary
Linktionary is an on-line dictionary/encyclopedia that includes extensive
links to help you further your network research and training. You'll find
Web links and links to related entries under each topic.

Proquest Dissertations & Theses Database (PQDT)
(E-Resource)
PQDT is a comprehensive source of multidisciplinary academic research
papers, ranging from engineering to environmental studies, and linguistics
to life sciences, and other disciplines. It is the official digital
dissertations archive for the Library of Congress and the database of record
for graduate research. It includes bibliographic citations for dissertations
dating from 1637, citation and abstracts for dissertations published since
July 1980 and Master’s theses since 1988, and citation, abstracts, a 24-page
preview and full-text for dissertations published since 1997.

and quantitative biology. It is home to the
Computing Research Repository (CoRR).
An FAQ guide is available.
CiteSeer
CiteSeer is a public search engine and digital library for scientific and
academic papers. It has over 700,000 documents, primarily in the fields of
computer and information science and engineering. CiteSeer has not been
comprehensively updated since roughly 2005 due to limitations in its
architecture design. It's a representative sampling of research in computer
and information science but is limited in its coverage since it only has
access to papers that are freely available.
CiteSeerx
CiteSeerx
is loosely based on the previous CiteSeer search
engine and digital library and is built with a new open source
infrastructure. It has over 1,077,967 articles and 20,328,278 citations.
However it is still in the alpha testing phase.
Computer Science Directory
This directory is developed as a project to list computer science links and
articles with high quality.

Yahoo! Directory
These are websites that have been reviewed by Yahoo! and found to be related
to computer science.
Intute Computing
Gateway
The Intute Computing Gateway provides free access to high quality resources
on the Internet. Each resource has been evaluated and categorised by subject
specialists based at UK universities.
NCSTRL (Networked Computer Science
Technical Reference Library)
An index of on-line technical reports and papers from 150 institution
archives.
Scirus
A comprehensive search engine for Internet resources focusing on web pages
with scientific content. With over 450 million scientific items indexed at
last count, it allows researchers to search for not only journal content but
also scientists' homepages, courseware, pre-print server material, patents
and institutional repository and website information.
The Collection of Computer
Science Bibliographies
This is a collection of bibliographies of scientific literature in computer
science from various sources, covering most aspects of computer science. The
bibliographies are updated weekly from their original locations such that
you'll always find the most recent versions here. The collection currently
contains more than 2 millions of references (mostly to journal articles,
conference papers and technical reports).
