NUS Business School's Financial Database

Databases

Databases are a good a place to begin research. They may contain articles in journals, papers in conference proceedings, newspapers, chapters in books, reports and reviews.

Orbis (Oriana Coverage)
Orbis is a comprehensive database containing financial information on over 100,000 public and private companies in 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Osiris
Osiris is a comprehensive database containing financial information listed companies, banks and insurance companies around the world.

Business Source Premier
A full-text database that contains more than 8,800 journal titles, market reports, country reports and SWOT analyses of companies.

Factiva
A full-text database containing over 8,000 full text articles from newspapers, news wires, magazines and company profiles, updated daily. Publications include Business Times, Straits Times, Asia Wall Street Journal and others.

LexisNexis Academic
This database provides access to nearly 6,000 titles in news, business and legal information, many in full-text. It includes company financial information, industry and market news, Straits Times, Business Times and other international newspapers, wire services, magazines and trade journals, U.S. federal and state case law, accounting information, medical news and abstracts, law reviews, and state and country profiles. News information is updated daily and wire services several times a day.

Investext Plus
Investext Plus provides access to 50,000 full-text investments reports of more than 11,000 public and private corporations around the world. The reports are produced by various global brokerage, investment banking and research firms.

Scopus
An abstracts database that contains peer-reviewed academic journals, conference proceedings, trade publications and Open Access publications. Covers various subjects including business and social sciences.

ISI Emerging Markets
ISI Emerging Markets 'delivers news, company and financial data direct from more than 35 emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe.' The database draws information from over 4400 publications. (From ISI Website)

ScienceDirect
A database of peer-reviewed journals for science, social sciences and humanities.

Singapore 1000
CD-ROM database containing basic information on the top 1000 Singapore companies, as ranked by sales figures. The CD-ROM is located at the Hon Sui Sen Memorial Library Information Desk.

Reference Sources

This is a select list of reference sources that give background information including broad overview, definitions, key issues, major dates or events, keywords and bibliographies.

These reference sources can be found at the Reference Section of the Hon Sui Sen Memorial Library:

Barron's finance & investment handbook (2007)
This new edition of the handbook contains a financial dictionary, investment analysis, guidelines for investment and a directory of major financial institutions such as brokerage firms, banks and regulatory bodies.

The Blackwell encyclopedia of management (2005)
The encyclopedia contains chapters such as Accounting and Finance, in individual volumes. Each chapter contains bibliographies, cross-referencing, theories, and best practices.

Dictionary of banking & finance (2003)
" This fully updated edition includes 9,000 key terms covering all aspects of banking and finance , from personal finance to international money markets. Its straightforward explanations make financial jargon and money matters accessible to all". From book jacket

Dictionary of financial abbreviations (2003)
The dictionary not only defines financial, business and economic acronyms (such as EU, GNP or IPO), but also provides longer explanations for the terms. Useful for students starting their studies in Finance and business.

Singapore banking and financial services directory (2004/2005)
A directory of major financial institutions in Singapore, such as banks and insurance companies.

Theses

NUS Theses

School of Business' M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses are now located in the Central Library. Approach Central Library's Loans Desk with the Call Number of the thesis in order to refer to it. Business School theses start with the Call Number HF345, followed by a four digit number for the year, and finally a one to three digit unique number.

Another good source is the database ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. It is a database of theses submitted to universities in North America, Europe and Australia.

Foreign Theses

Non-NUS theses are available in the HSSML, on the 2nd floor. They are shelved under call numbers beginning with HF345*UMI.

Use Orbis (Oriana coverage) to supplement your search for company names and addresses in Singapore after using Singapore 1000, or if you are unable to come to the library to use the Singapore 1000 CD-ROM.

Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Financial Database
Financial information provided by MAS, including exchange rates, domestic interest rates and historic data on bonds and treasury bills.

Wachowicz's Web World: Web Sites For Discerning Finance Students
James Van Horne and John Wachowicz, authors of the text Fundamentals of Financial Management, recommend websites for finance students. Includes Powerpoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets and tables from previous editions.

Washington Post glossary of Business terms
Notabled newspaper Washington Post provides a glossary of more than 1,200 terms for business and finance.

Wharton Finance Knowledge Project
Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, provides news, analytical articles and podcasts of a wide variety of Finance and Business topics, such as Investment, Strategic Management and Business Ethics.
