Why Cite?

You need to document the sources that are used in your research paper. The main purposes of citing are:

  • To give credit for ideas, information and actual phrasing that are used
  • To lend support to arguments by referring to authoritative sources
  • To give credit to your sources
  • To help readers verify and follow up on the sources used
  • To show the research done

When do you need to cite?

You must quote the source when you include the following in your paper:

  • direct quotations
  • indirect quotations
  • major ideas that are not your own
  • facts, information and statistics that are not general knowledge
