Ebooks on the Web


Bartleby Library provides access to reference works such as the Columbia Encyclopedia, the American Heritage Dictionary and the Roget's Thesaurus.  It also contains ebooks on history, verses and quotations, cooking, as well as works by selected authors.
 
Barnes & Noble provides access to over 100 ebooks on American and European literature, Philosophy & Science, Politics & History, etc.
 
Bookface provides access to ebooks, categorized into many subject areas such as Arts & Entertainment, Classics, Literature, Poetry, Science Fiction, Travel, etc.  This free service requires a one-time registration. 
 
Council on Library & Information Resources (CLIR) provides access to full-text reports, white papers, newsletters and research briefs on library and information-related topics.
 
E-Editions by the University of California Press offers nearly 60 ebooks online, categorized into subject areas such as European History, African Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, South Asian Studies, Literature and Classics.  The collection can be browsed by title or subject. 
 
Electronic Text Center by the University of Virginia provides access to over 1,200 titles of literary works, including classic British and American fiction, children's literature, American history and Shakespeare.  Available for online viewing or download for the MS Reader.
 
The EServer at Carnegie Mellon offers more than 29,000 works online, ranging from arts and culture to history and politics.  It includes book-length nonfiction and miscellaneous literatures, scripts of plays ranging from modern to classics, and articles.
 
Fliplibrary provides access to over 2,500 eText books searchable by keywords, author, title and categorized into various subjects such as Fiction, Natural History, Poetry, Drama, Science, Technology, Religion, etc.
 
The Internet Public Library Online Texts Collection contains over 12,000 titles which can be browsed by Dewey classification, author and title.  The collection includes "various online books, stories, essays, poems, articles, dramas, letters and speeches that are freely available over the Internet."
 
Missouri Botannical Garden contains several illustrated guides to plants such as grasses and medicinal plants, published in the 17th and 18th centuries.
 
National Academy Press offers over 1,800 books online.  The books are categorized into various subjects, and can also be searched by title or text using their search engine.
 
NetLibrary offers over 4,000 ebook titles for free, in addition to the titles which the Library subscribes.
 
The On-Line Books Page contains a searchable listing of over 11,000 English ebooks available on the Internet for free.  Created and maintained by John Mark Ockerbloom at the University of Pennsylvania.
 
Project Gutenberg makes available public domain publications in ASCII text format. Included are light literature, like Alice in Wonderland and Aesop's Fables, heavy literature such as Shakespeare's plays and reference materials like Roget's thesarus. The files are for downloading and viewing offline.
 
University of California Press offers nearly 60 books online, including books on International Studies, Classics, Literature, History, Anthropology, Politics and Religions Studies.
